When silver-salt printing was the most common method, photographers took the pictures with a film camera and the film was printed d by a developer in the darkroom.
Since digital cameras appear, (except in special cases), people have taken photos and digital printers have printed them. Where did all the people who worked in the darkroom go?
It's 2024 again, and AI has learned from countless images and is recreating them again. In Project [FIRING MYSELF], AI creates images and humans make Gum Bichromate prints. It's very funny to see a human print a computer-generated image.
Will photographers be displaced by AI, just as many darkroom have been displaced? Project [FIRING MYSELF] is a job searching and firing oneself at the same time.
<The base>
Imagine this. A dystopia where many jobs, including photographers and those in the visual industry, have been replaced by AI. The dystopia and the battlefield in the painting have something in common. In the sense that you've lost your home.
A physically hand-printed image of AI beyond the monitor. In the age of AI, FIRING MYSELF questions whether your workplace is safe.
It is a kind of experiment in survival (on oneself) and self-destruction as a photographer in this era.

<스스로를 해고하는 일>
은염 인화 방식이 가장 널리 쓰이던 때. 사진은 사진가가 촬영하고 필름 인화는 주로 현상소에서 맡았다.
디지털카메라가 상용화된 이후(특별한 경우를 제외하고) 사진은 사람이 촬영하고, 인화는 디지털 프린터가 맡았다. 현상소에서 일하던 사람들은 모두 어디로 갔을까.
다시 2024년. AI는 무수히 많은 이미지를 학습했고 다시 재창조한다. Project [FIRING MYSELF]에서는 AI가 이미지를 만들고 인간이 검 프린트를 한다. 컴퓨터가 만든 이미지를 인간이 프린트한다니. 코미디 같은 일이다.
포토그래퍼는 AI에게 터전을 빼앗기게 될까. 많은 현상소가 없어졌던 것처럼 말이다. Project [FIRING MYSELF]는 구직활동임과 동시에 스스로를 해고하는 일이다.
<터전>
이런 상상을 한 번 해보자. 포토그래퍼를 포함한 상당수의 직업이 AI에 대체된 디스토피아를 말이다. 디스토피아와 그림 속 전쟁터는 어떤 교차점이 있다. 터전을 잃어버렸다는 점에서.
모니터를 넘어, 물리적으로 핸드 프린트 된 AI 이미지. 이런 디스토피아에서 [FIRING MYSELF]는 당신의 터전은 안전한지 반문한다.
이것은 이 시대의 사진가로서 생존을 다룬(자신을 대상으로 한) 일종의 실험이자 자기 파괴인 것이다.
